How the Heck Do I Learn to be an Artist?

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

If you think about creating art, you'll sake yourself out. I've learned that the key to creating great art is to let go of the control. The painting didn't turn out how you wanted? No big deal. Paint over it. Start over. Trust the process and just see where you end up.

I remember having a long week at work once. I was full of energy and frustration. I took it out on the canvas. Roses have always been a pain in the ass for me. They're super hard, folks, promise. I remember trying to make roses and failing miserable. Rather than trying to control the painting I just said, "F it!" and slapped some other flowers on too. I piled paint, after paint, after paint to the picture. I created textures. I slapped lots of pretty colors on there. I felt like I salvaged the painting.

I posted the painting to Instagram and got an immediate response. You know what happened? That was the first painting I ever sold! What?! Crazy, I know.

Being an artist is all about trusting your instincts, going with the flow, trusting the process, and experimenting. Art is about making it your own. If you try to paint like someone else, you'll end up frustrated. Only you can paint your art. Trust that. Let go of that control. Let go of that self-doubt.
